I chanced upon your previous blog and I am now residing in Arkansas. I am a Singaporean, pure bred… ;o) Ya la… really! I am! I never bluff you one! LOL…
But jokes aside – I hope you will truly enjoy all that Singapore has to offer. you will love it… especially the food! )
Glad you found us. We are having a great time – mosly. We’ve experienced our share of challenges and culture shock being our first overseas assignment but we do enjoy being here. The food is amazing!! I thought with all of the walking and sweating I’d drop pounds quickly. Not so much. The food is too good. How long have you been out of Singapore? I’d love to hear of your favorites, things you miss, etc. We love to find new foods and new places to go and having only been here for 8 months there is still much to discover.
Arkansas must have been a culture shock for you! We really enjoy Arkansas. My sister lived there for a while and we liked to go to the state parks for vacations as often as possible. It’s a beautiful place.
Thanks for replying. I hope you will have a wonderful Chinese New Year there.
Not much of a culture shock for me as I had lived in Arkansas before, when I worked for Wal-Mart home office about 13 years ago. Yes, I find myself back here again, but in the mountains.
But yes, I’ve never really felt like I belonged in SG. I was constantly perspiring and I always felt like a sore thumb. So I am loving it here.
I have a lot of fav foods… Char Kway Teow (the best is Hill Street Char Kway Teow, which before I left SG, could be found at Bedok South Road wet market, opp Temasek Junior College).
Fried Carrot Cake (Chai Tao Kway)
Roti Prata
Fish Head Curry (Banana Leaf in Katong – 10 Ceylon Road; Tel: 6447 0096 )
Katong Laksa (4 Stores) (47, 49, 57 and 328 – Corner of Ceylon Road and East Coast Road)
We love the hawker centers. And honestly, we do love Newton. It’s “home” for us since we stayed nearby in a svc apt for 5 weeks. We have our favorite stalls and it just feels sort of like going home in a way. I’ve written about it several times in posts. We have tried many hawker centers, though, and have not been disappointed. We really love the Indian food. I haven’t tried many of the dishes you’ve mentioned so we now have some new things to try. Thanks! Perhaps we can meet up if you make it over here. Take care.
Hello!
Jennifer mentioned your blog to me. I am from Houston and moving with my family to Singapore in March. We are so excited but nervous! I’m most nervous about the school system- i have two little girls- one in Kindergarten and one who is 3 and will be in regular daycare and with my husband the rest of the time.
I would love your email address, if you dont mind a few random questions as they arise! And perhaps we can get together for coffee with you and Jennifer when we come for a visit in January?
Nora
Nora, did I ever reply to you? I was just digging through the blog reminiscing and ran across this. Oh my goodness!! I’m so sorry if I didn’t reply. That’s really not my M O. I actually think you are here as I remember Jennifer telling me she was meeting with someone new recently. Wow, I’m so embarassed. Please forgive me. If you are here, welcome to Singapore! Please let me know if I can help. I promise not to ignore you! ugh… I feel so bad.
Wondering if you might have any information on decently priced mattresses. The one we have it not cutting it. It came with the house but we’d like a comfortable one. We’d also like to not spend $2000 replacing it.

Kim Choo Nonya Bak Chang (Katong)
Don’t go to eat at Newton – it is overpriced and over-rated.
Sugar Cane juice has A LOT of sugar, but fantastic with lemon!
Zhi Char in SG is quite fabulous.
Geylang has A LOT of awesome food… http://www.goodfood.sg/geylang
Have a wonderful time. I might be going to visit in December.
